Put up your hand if you’ve ever had a pair of eyeglasses “walk off”. Put up your hand again if you also have a 2 year old who likes to hide things – like eyeglasses – just because he can. I can’t recall how many times I have had a pair of glasses walk off – or should I say get carried away like some child’s spoil of war. And these are not cheap eyeglasses either.
I need my glasses. Without them, I am pretty much useless. I work on the computer and I take a lot of pictures. So not having my glasses makes my life unbearable – they are such an essential item to me.
Of course, my two-year-old looks at those curious wire and glass spectacles as literally that – a wonderful spectacle – or some sort of child’s treasure.
It usually goes something like this: My glasses suddenly mysteriously disappear. Then I look at my son playing innocently with his toy cars and it hits me. I look in vain for where I think he might have put them. And if I’m lucky, I’ll find them in one of his favourite hiding spots – like his sister’s tricycle seat. If I’m even luckier, I’ll get my glasses back in exactly the same shape as when I left them. But that’s another story.
