Clarinet

Thursday, November 7th, 2013

Music comes from the most interesting places.  For example, I was trying to get my son out of bed the other morning and suddenly realized the scratching noise my fingers were making on his pillow was rather musical.  I even took advantage of that fact by saying it was a mouse squeaking trying to wake him up.

Maybe that’s similar to how the discoverer of the reed instrument stumbled upon the first “clarinet”.  Whatever the case, that technology has come a long way until we now have this beautiful clarinet mouthpiece at m123 that will make music that put a smile on that first reed musician’s face as well as audiences today.

Amplifiers

Monday, October 21st, 2013

We have to be careful not to turn the music up too loud in our current home.  The reason is that we’re living in an attached condo-style house where the neighbours would easily hear the deep bass of our high end sound system.  We used to live in a detached home where we could raise the volume higher without disturbing anyone in the vicinity.  But not now.

It’s almost come to the point where we don’t need a sound system at all anymore.  So I wouldn’t be surprised to see our stereo next to a Fishman Amplifiers for sale ad in the local newspaper.

This poses a potential problem however if our children ever decide to take up an instrument that uses an amplifier like a bass or electric guitar.   I wouldn’t want to discourage them from pursuing an interest in any instrument.  But we’ll have to make alternative arrangements if they ever do decide to do that.

microphone

It never ceases to amaze me how performers and stage show creators can come up with stunning new show ideas.  For example, there’s a recent performance by a band I watched on YouTube recently where the performers came out one by one following some stage helpers who had placed there “wireless” instruments on stage ahead of them.  This is only recently been made possible by wireless technology.

It’s this same technology behind this excellent 8-channel uhf handheld wireless microphone system at musician’s friend.  Can you even imagine what stage shows would be like anymore without this amazing technology?

high powered amplifier

Saturday, August 3rd, 2013

We were recently at a friend’s house and he was showing us his old dj equipment – including a super high powered amplifier and an old turntable.  It was quite impressive.  He had a ton of other equipment too like a reel-to-reel machine, tape decks, vcrs and such.  I didn’t one, but I’m certain he also had a pa system in there somewhere at least comparable to the cool portable pa system at musicians friend.  It made me jealous and curious to hear what all that equipment sounded like.

cigar magazines

Sunday, June 9th, 2013

There are probably thousands of different kinds of cigars on the market that you can buy if you’re into cigars – like my husband once was.  There are cigar shops where you live probably too.  But who’s to know what cigar might be the best of the lot – even in a relatively limited shop of cigars in your city?  You could try them all.  And that might be a fun thing to do.  But if you’re only interested in cutting to the chase and finding the best available cigar as recommended by some of the best cigar afficiondos, your best bet is to rely on cigar magazines that make it their business and highest priority to ferret out the best cigars from around the world for you.

al capone

Monday, May 6th, 2013

It would be interesting to find out how many men still hand out al capone cigars at weddings.  My husband did it at ours almost 12 years ago.  And at the time, I hadn’t heard of any other grooms doing this at any of my friends weddings.  Of course, that’s hardly a sufficient sample size to tell one way or the other. I was told that this has been a traditional practice in some parts in the past.  Maybe it’s similar to the tradition of handing out cigars when a baby has arrived.  But I can’t be sure of either.
